Maracatu is a traditional parading culture originating in northeastern Brazil. Its roots can be traced back to Africa. Saturated with spirituality and secrecy, it is largely unknown beyond Brazil. However, Brazilian musician Aline Morales has brought Maracatu culture to the unlikeliest of places: Toronto, Canada. Aline has formed a group of Canadians with whom to practice Maracatu drumming with, some Brazilian, some not. As much as Aline and the members of her new group feel as though they are connected to Maracatu culture, a trip to Recife, Brazil, forces them to question their own motivations and appropriation of Maracatu culture. Who is the culture for? Who is allowed to practice the culture? Who profits from the culture? While the explicit connections to New Orleans are not drawn in the film, these are issues that have great resonance for New Orleans masking and parading traditions that are under constant threat of appropriation, exploitation and extinction.
