Documentary: Nonfiction films exploring real people, places, and stories through a variety of perspectives and styles. (Encore screenings are programming decisions and do not indicate award preference. Schedule subject to change.)

This intimate short documentary captures a unique musical exchange between legendary maestros Taj Mahal and David Hidalgo (Los Lobos) and the young students of Los Cenzontles Cultural Arts Academy. Filmed in the same spirit and style as our earlier short, Linda and La Marisoul: An Afternoon at Los Cenzontles, this film reveals the magic that happens when generations and traditions meet.

During this special masterclass, the students introduced Taj and David to traditional chilean songs from the coastal regions of Guerrero and Oaxaca, while the maestros shared the deep soulfulness of the blues. What unfolds is a spontaneous, heartfelt dialogue through music—bridging cultures, expanding horizons, and celebrating the power of creative connection.

Directed by Ashley James and edited by Maureen Gosling, Taj Mahal & David Hidalgo: An Afternoon at Los Cenzontles is a moving portrait of mentorship, discovery, and the living traditions of music.
