Turf is a tale of autonomy set in a surreal world of artificial lawns and epic skies. Embracing the tropes of the ‘intelligent, sexless’ middle aged women of television and film, the main female protagonist wears the brown hat and coat of the detective over her military style tank top and underwear. Encased in a glass dome she watches the actions of an array of characters as they intrude, obscure and deface her personal bubble. The film illustrates a pivotal moment for this character as she claims a space of her own. This perpetual erosion of a women’s personal space is indicative of broader and more serious intrusions of emotional and physical space suffered by many women in society. Turf in turn critiques the currency of martyrdom by women and sneers at the premise that women remain quiet and politely endure the rude and thoughtless.
