Due to their immigration and socioeconomic status, day laborers are one of the most vulnerable groups to exploitation by employers and harassment from police. Filmed by Jansikwe Medina-Tayac, Jornalerx tells the story of the day laborers of San Bernardino, as they fight to secure a day labor center for their corner. Jornalero brings to light the injustices that many other undocumented workers face, as they are overworked and underpaid.

“Queernidad” by Osbaldo Ozuna and Sofia Marquez Gomez explores the relationship between gender roles, queerness, and Latinidad. The Latine community has often grappled with rigid hetereonormative values that conflict with queerness while forging a identity that has often appreciated fluid gender and sexual expression. In this film two queer Latines explore their own plight against challenging cultural and societial norms. Their stories showed how they developed a sense of freedom to foster relationships with families and communities after coming out.

Queernidad

Machismo has been pervasive within the chicanx-latinx culture for centuries and has been the source of conflict for many relationships. Te Amo, Mijo explores the Castro’s intergenerational experience with machismo through the testimony of James Castro. The Castro’s moved to Chino from Mexico and have lived there for two generations now. This film shows us that even though fathers and sons have tension at times due to gender expectations, they love each other nonetheless.
