In the summer of 1965, 21-year-old surfer and art-school dropout Rick Griffin encountered The Charlatans’ “Seed” poster at a friend’s house in downtown LA. The poster’s hybrid style of Old West typography and British Invasion cool captivated Griffin immediately. It would propel him on a rambling road trip up to the old frontier mining town of Virginia City, Nevada where a renegade avant-garde aesthetic was evolving around The Charlatans and psychedelics. That transformative trip would center Rick and his art at Ground Zero of the San Francisco psychedelic rock and art scene that would, in a few short years, fundamentally rewire mainstream culture.
