Welcome to the 2021 Omaha Film Festival Writers Theatre! Every year in an effort to showcase our screenplay finalists we bring in actors and do live staged readings of selections from each of their scripts. This year with the virtual festival we decided to film the readings and provide them virtually. In addition to the readings we also had a chance to have a Zoom chat with each of the screenwriters so those conversations are also included in this program. We hope you enjoy them!
The Lighthouse is an hour-long drama set in and around the Sacramento River Delta – one of the few remaining swampy, rural, isolated places in Northern California. Led by an enigmatic preacher, The Lighthouse church has slipped off the grid and out of sight of the authorities after being denied religious tax exemption. When a woman affiliated with the church goes missing and later turns up dead, detective Sam Powell is called in from a Sacramento PD unit that specializes in cults. Sam's compulsive vices and dark past threaten to overtake her considerable investigative talents. The Lighthouse is about faith: how we reject it outright or surrender to it completely, how we pervert and distort it for our own ends. How it can utterly destroy us and fully resurrect us.
