A haunting debut filled to the brim with an eclectic cast that includes Pose’s Danielle Cooper, drag icon Lady Bunny, and trans body-builder Mason Caminiti, bends time through its multimedia approach to telling the story of one last transgressive night in the legendary and infamous Playland Café, Boston’s oldest gay bar established in 1937. The history of the pioneering queer space and those who inhabited it while battling local zoning ordinances, celebrating pride, and fighting for civil rights, is beautifully crafted by West’s unique voice and vision, while giving a nod to experimental cinematic elders Derek Jarman and Sally Potter. Demolished in the 90s, queer ancestral conspirators of every ilk linger in Playland, refusing to allow us to forget the importance of such establishments.
