Luis De Filippis’ extraordinary feature debut follows Ren, a trans girl out of a job struggling to make ends meet, on a trip with her family to a Canadian-Italian beach resort. Amidst the town’s half-clothed sunburnt bodies and recklessness that lingers one lukewarm drink away from trouble, Ren seeks solace with her sister. Free from the melodrama and cliché that we’ve come to expect from films about trans women — and especially trans women with their families — De Filippis mines poignance from the feelings of isolation and otherness borne in such an implicitly conservative environment, alongside both the tension of family dynamics when one person can’t help but take up more space than they used to, and the tender shorthand of a family that looks out for its own. Something You Said Last Night heralds an extraordinary new voice in trans cinema — just don’t steal her vape.
