In 2003, following a Supreme Court case, Newsweek featured a lesbian couple on its cover asking, "Is Gay Marriage Next?" This inspired a young, closeted woman to come out. Two decades later, in a post-Roe era, she tracks down that lesbian couple and wonders: Is gay marriage the next to go?
Cashing Out
In the early 1990s, at the height of the AIDS crisis, a new type of business emerged that brought hope to thousands of destitute, terminally ill people. These “viatical settlement” companies bought sick people’s life insurance policies, providing quick cash and a chance to live and die with dignity. It became a billion-dollar industry.
