George Dureau: New Orleans Artist explores the life and career of one of New Orleans’ cultural icons, the painter and photographer George Valentine Dureau. Dureau’s artistic imperative was to tell stories and his models were his protagonists. His life and his work were always inseparable, but sadly in the last decade of his life, Dureau was afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease. Trying to preserve his legacy, Dureau scribbled biographical notes and snapped endless rolls of the French Quarter on disposable cameras. Utilizing extensive archival documentary footage, unpublished photographs, and revealing interviews with his friends and models, George Dureau tells the story of a New Orleans that no longer exists.
