Fleeing from their abusive and neglectful father, Link and his younger half-brother Travis set off in search of Link’s mother. Along the way they encounter Pasmay, a Mi’kmaw dancer, also estranged from his family. A growing attraction between Link and Pasmay, and exposure to Mi’kmaw culture, help Link see a future for himself. Remarkable performances and beautiful cinematography make for an exquisitely touching and engaging film that’s part road movie, part romance, all told from a queer Indigenous perspective. Writer-director Bretten Hannam has created an award-winning tale that tackles difficult subjects with delicacy, sweet humor and emotional complexity, all while avoiding clichés and stereotypes.
