Unsettled&nbsp;is a feature-length documentary revealing the untold stories of LGBT refugees and asylum seekers who have fled intense persecution from their home countries and who are resettling in the U.S. As new leadership in America continues to demonize immigrants and drastically restrict the flow of refugees and asylum seekers into the U.S., Unsettled&nbsp;humanizes a group few people know who are desperately trying to create new and safer homes. Subhi,&nbsp;a gay Syrian refugee who, having survived multiple death threats from Islamic terrorists, beatings by a homophobic father, and a nation devastated by war, finds his voice as a leader for refugee rights in the U.S.&nbsp;Cheyenne and Mari, a lesbian couple from Angola who, having faced brutal harassment from family and neighbours, seek uncertain asylum through the American immigration courts while pursuing their dreams of becoming musicians.&nbsp;Junior,&nbsp;a gender non- conforming gay man from the Congo, struggles to find even basic housing and livelihood while exploring a more fluid gender identity. Unsettled&nbsp;takes place largely in the&nbsp;San Francisco Bay Area, historically a beacon for dislocated LGBT people in the U.S. While cultural narratives of a “queer promised land” still persist, the film asks whether Northern California is even practical as a place to resettle LGBT refugees, especially given the enormous gentrification, increased costs of living and scarcity of housing in recent years -- a set of problems present in many American cities. What are the costs persecuted immigrants pay for seeking refuge in America? And how are everyday Americans stepping forward to help those most in need? Presented by Amnesty International Canada

Johnson) comes&nbsp;Welcome to Chechnya, a powerful and eye-opening documentary about a group of activists risking their lives to confront the ongoing anti-LGBTQ persecution in the repressive and closed Russian republic of Chechnya. With unfettered access and a commitment to protecting anonymity, this documentary exposes Chehnya’s underreported atrocities while highlighting a group of people who are confronting brutality head-on. The organization’s name is an homage to the underground railroad, which helped African-American slaves to escape slavery in the 1800s. Prior to his work with Rainbow Railroad, Kimalhi worked with the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network, the YMCA, and the Inside Out Toronto LGBTI Film and Video Festival.&nbsp; Tom Shepard, Unsettled - Tom Shepard is an American documentary film director and producer. He was a writer, editor, and researcher at National Public Radio (US public television and radio) before shifting his career to focus on making documentaries that “challenge beliefs and give voice to those in society whose experiences have been overlooked, misrepresented or vilified.” His films include “Scout’s Honor,” which traces the conflict between the anti-gay policies of the Boy Scouts of America and efforts to overturn them. Tom is the director of “Unsettled: Seeking Refuge in America.” David France, Welcome to Chechnya - David France is a journalist, author, and documentary filmmaker from the United States. His work has been published in the New Yorker, New York Times Magazine, GQ, New York Magazine, amongst others. He has written several books including “How to Survive a Plague,” which was published in 2016 and considered “the definitive book on AIDS activism.” Those of you who scour Netflix for great queer content may be familiar with The Death and Life of Masha P. Johnson, a 2017 documentary of queer activist which David directed. And most recently, earlier this year, Welcome to Chechnya, a documentary we are featuring in this film festival, debuted at the Sundance Film Festival.
