A natural heir to the films of John Waters, HONEYCOMB is a bizarre, psychedelic love letter to teenage girls and surreal horror movies via a punk female utopia that’s gone very very wrong. With summer ennui threatening to put her in a stranglehold, teenaged Willow stumbles across a decrepit cabin and sees a world of possibility. She and her friends pack their bags and whisper a quick goodbye to the life they knew. They flow through open fields, blissfully entering their new sun-soaked world. But instead of creating an idyllic world of their own design, they soon succumb to age-old resentments and temptations. With their friendship festering and their commune distorting into something akin to a cult, they implement a disciplinary system to punish transgressions and usher in “the ominous end of innocence.” Lent an uncommon authenticity in that nightmarish, abstract place between adolescence and adulthood, this DIY gem is an increasingly bad trip that proves to be one hell of a ride.
