Meet an expert in physical distancing, the fire-lookout ranger. Ode to Desolation contemplates the dying days of fire lookouts in North America. In the early 1900s there were more than 9,000 fire lookouts in the United States. Today only 65 remain staffed. What will we lose as these lookouts close one by one?
