For fans of the late film director Lynn Shelton, We Go Way Back is a trip back to the beginning of a promising career. In this tender, low-key film, set in Seattle and its rural surroundings, Kate, a young actor, is given her first lead role in a laughably serious version of Hedda Gabbler. Kate takes the role with optimism, guided and eventually protected by the wisdom of her 12-year-old self. Episodic, alternately funny and poignant, the film is a whimsical impression of Ms. Shelton’s early career in theater. If you haven’t already met this gifted director, you will see much to love, and much to mourn, in this early film. Ms Shelton, who had a great fondness for The Rose Theatre and the Port Townsend Film Festival, died in unexpectedly in May. She was 54 years old.
