A native park ranger shares the secrets of Nyungwe National Park in Rwanda, one of the most biodivers places in the world with almost 300 bird species, over 1,000 plant species, and dozens of large and small mammals. 25 years after the devastation of the Rwandan Civil War, the park is now one of the best-conserved montane rainforests in Central Africa. As Claver walks through the forest we uncover the origins of his conservation values and the history of an ecosystem that survived one of Rwanda's darkest periods. Director's Statement:Despite the globalized nature of society today, many people do not have the opportunity to personally experience the transformative power of the wilderness they impact. Visual storytelling is a powerful tool that creates emotional connections between people and the natural world and thus facilitates the protection of our planet’s wild places. My goal is to tell these stories.

A Walk Through the Land of a Thousand Hills

Hundreds of cheetah cubs are being stolen from the wild, decimating the wild population in Africa, to be smuggled illegally into the Middle East and sold as pets. This short looks at the illegal wildlife pet trade and the role social media plays in the trade of exotic animals online. Director's Statement:This film came about through 3 years of researching what the Cheetah Conservation Fund and other NGO's were doing in the way of conservation. During this time, we realised that there was a big focus on the illegal trade of dead animal parts, but no one was telling the story of the illegal trade in live animals, especially those destined for the pet trade. The role of social media in the trade, the parading and trading of exotic pets, and what it's doing to the natural population, is something everyone needs to know more about.

Not a Pet

Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is the first ever community-owned and run elephant sanctuary in Africa. This oasis where orphans grow up, learning to be wild so that one day they can rejoin their herds, is as much about the people as it is about elephants. It's a powerful story about the changing relationship between people and the animals they are protecting. Director's Statement:The sanctuary isn’t just about saving elephants; it’s about breaking down stereo-types and redefining wildlife management. When people realize that they can benefit from healthy elephant populations, they’re proud to take care of wildlife.&nbsp;Reteti is also empowering young Samburu women to be the first-ever women elephant keepers in all of Africa. At first, the community didn’t think there was a place for women in the workplace. Now, the success of these women elephant keepers is unlocking new possibilities, setting a powerful example for young girls hoping to pursue their dreams. It’s also changing how the community relates to elephants. Schoolchildren who have never seen an elephant before or who were afraid of elephants visit Reteti and experience these elephants up close, and they realize they can grow up to be a veterinarian or an elephant keeper.&nbsp;This story is as much about the people as it is about elephants.&nbsp;Reteti operates in partnership with Conservation International who provide critical operational support and work to scale the Reteti community-centered model to create lasting impacts worldwide.
