Trapped within a cacophonous inner-city landscape, on the outskirts of Johannesburg there lay barely- there decrepit multi-storey buildings housing several thousand men. Within the darkened hallways of these single-sex hostels men are men, yet... Beneath the surface belies a modest and hidden complex socialising mechanism which equally subverts and supports Black Zulu traditional patriarchal masculinities… Sonder conjoins stories of brotherly love within the compromised mining compounds built during an inhumane Apartheid regime. In these stories we hear of strained desire and hushed love between men; incessant brutish violence in the name of masculinity; and a deep need for repair and reconciliation in a broken system and a loss of family due to lack of understanding.
