Andrei Gruzsniczki’s comedy-drama No Rest for the Old Lady tackles fundamental matters of life head-on: friendship, faith, respect for the dead, religious rituals, as well as quotidian routines.
In the film, Emil (Mircea Andreescu), a nonbeliever, is challenged by the faith of his best friend Titi (Valer Dellakeza) and his strange confession: Emil’s late wife has moved in with Titi and haunts him. Delicate and impeccably acted, No Rest for the Old Lady is an honest glimpse into the lives of the elderly.
Premiering at Moscow International Film Festival earlier this year, and nominated for the Tiatan Award at the Beijing International Film Festival, No Rest for the Old Lady adds to Gruzsniczki’s list of accolades: the 2008 Main Award, FIPRESCI Award at CinePecs Moveast IFF, and the 2009 Best Romanian Film at Transylvania IFF for The Other Irene; and the 2013 Special Jury Award at Rome IFF for Quod Erat Demonstrandum.
