Give as a gift
Seventeen-year-old Luthando, bookish and adorkable, is back for another year at a prestigious South African all-girls' boarding school, where manicured lawns hide a deeply conservative culture and nonconformity is quietly punished. As the school's lone scholarship girl, she keeps her head down, her marks up, and her strict mother's expectations close to heart.
Her world tilts when Ayanda, bold and magnetic, arrives. Their connection sparks into a secret romance, pulling Luthando into Ayanda's carefree friend group and a freedom she's never known within the school's rigid walls.
But balancing her old life, new friendships, and first love proves too much. When jealousy drives Ayanda to a reckless decision, intimate photos of the two girls spread through the school, putting Luthando's scholarship, future, and relationship with her conservative single mother at risk.
Facing public scrutiny and her mother's outrage, Luthando finds unexpected courage, standing firmly in her truth as a queer young woman who will no longer shrink for anyone. Taken aback but supportive in her own way, her mother asks for time to process. Though the romance ends, Luthando finds something steadier: a loyal friend, a community of girls who show up for her, and the joy of owning her story.
