When struggling sardine-canning factory owner Sanjay Pillay finds his business on the brink of collapse, he comes up with an unlikely solution: launch his very own beauty pageant, Miss Pillay Pilchards, to generate publicity and boost sales.

With the reluctant help of his twin sister Samantha, Sanjay sets about creating a competition that he hopes will put his little company on the map. But when an increasingly colourful cast of contestants — far removed from the conventional image of a beauty queen — sign up, his carefully conceived publicity stunt takes on a life of its own.

As the pageant attracts growing attention, Sanjay finds himself caught between commercial ambition and the unexpected community spirit developing around the competition. Beneath its playful premise, Lucky Fish is a warm-hearted comedy about family, belonging, perseverance and the idea that beauty is about far more than appearances.

Set against the vibrant backdrop of Durban, Joshua Rous's crowd-pleasing comedy celebrates the wonderfully eccentric characters and communities that make life anything but predictable.
