Cape Town Opera’s spectacular production of Verdi’s AIDA screens at SAFF 2026 in a bold, visually stunning reimagining of the world’s most iconic opera and marks the first South African opera production to receive a commercial cinema release.

Set in a futuristic African kingdom, this groundbreaking retelling of Verdi’s tale blends epic storytelling with cutting-edge design, animation and video—delivering a visceral movie experience packed with passion, betrayal and the clash of empires.

At the heart of the story is Aida, an enslaved Ethiopian princess, and Radamès, the Egyptian general she secretly loves. As war rages and loyalties are tested, their forbidden romance unfolds with all the riveting drama expected from emotive opera.

With visionary direction by Magdalene Minnaar, choreography by Gregory Maqoma and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Kamal Khan, AIDA is a thrilling fusion of grand opera and African artistry brought vividly to life for the screen by Peachy Pictures.

Whether you're a seasoned opera lover or a curious filmgoer craving something extraordinary, don’t miss this cinematic event of the year.
