I am Sheriff follows a young man as he travels the mountain kingdom of Lesotho showing his film in remote villages, schools and communities. Sheriff was born with a girl’s body, but as the grandmother in his film recounts, he refused to wear dresses and always wanted to play with the boys. “My name is Sheriff now”, he says, “if you want me to come home and visit my home village you have to learn to call me by my name.” Through his film and personal narration, Sheriff talks to his audiences about gender identity and the frustration of being born the ‘wrong’ sex.&nbsp;His spectators react with surprise and curiosity, but also offer remarkable warmth, love and acceptance that ultimately encourage him to make his choice.&nbsp; Note: there is free bonus content available for this film. I am Sheriff

A film that follows a young man as he travels the mountain kingdom of Lesotho showing his film in remote villages, schools and communities.

Based on a poem by Education without Borders' (EwB) co-founder, Cecil Hershler, this short film was proudly produced by EwB. Through the medium of dance, the film tells the story of a young girl in a South African township. 13-year-old Onitha's world is shattered after she experiences sexual violence by a trusted family member. Fearing shame and rejection, she turns to her teacher for help, relying on him as her protector. He shrinks from the responsibility and chooses not to intervene. As time passes, guilt consumes him, manifesting as a tormenting figure representing the shame of inaction and silence. “Shame” becomes his constant companion. This film delves into Onitha’s trauma, revealing her isolation in a community that failed to protect her. As the characters confront their own burdens, they recognize that shame is a universal experience, confirming the collective responsibility that we all share when we look away. The narrative highlights the importance of community networks, the role of educators in providing support and breaking the cycle of silence surrounding gender-based violence. Shame

This short film underscores the power of storytelling through poetry, dance and art, while highlighting the profound impact that a single moment of empathy—or the lack thereof—can have on a young person's life.

This film adds to the worldwide growing conversation of native peoples reclaiming their land and taking up space for the first time in modern society. This documentary follows the first peoples of Southern Africa, the Khoi, and San, fighting to save the two rivers and the cultural significance they carry for their identity. These rivers have been a point of contention several times in their history as they mark the first land dispossession and encounters with colonialism involving Jan Van Riebeek and the Dutch East India Company as well as the Portuguese and Khoi &amp; San War. They are and have been important cultural symbols and embodiments of their rituals and identities throughout centuries of language and land loss. But once again these rivers are at the forefront of colonial injustice as Liesbeek Leisure Property Trust builds a R4.5 billion development on the confluence of the rivers that will host Amazon.com. Members of the community have been against this development from the start of 2017 but have faced many challenges and delays in getting the issue heard in court. With this development having major financial backing and continuing to build despite the high court halting the development, it seems capitalism will once again shape the landscape of Cape Town and bury the history of its true founders.
