Motheo, a lonely musician and debt collector with a ruthless boss, finds his world turned upside down when he falls in love with his latest assignment, feisty single mum and enterprising wedding planner Refilwe. For Love and Broken Bones is an engaging and unexpectedly tender&nbsp;gangster flick come love story with Philip Marlowe tones that is genuinely funny at times, darkly gripping at others and overall entirely entertaining. Written and directed by up and coming South African talent Teboho Malope, and produced by Angus Gibson (director of last years Back of the Moon) this is a rollicking, unpredictable and charming yarn, bolstered by great performances and an excellent live music soundtrack. Well worth the ticket.

For Love and Broken Bones

This gentle, short film features appealing acting by Siyabonga, a twelve-year-old boy sent to his grandmother’s village while his parents sort out their marriage. Siyabonga becomes the village letter reader, connecting people with their loved ones around the country. He discovers the power of words, and cannot bring himself to cause pain to a beautiful young woman who has received bad news. Set in the magnificent Drakensburg Mountains and beautifully filmed, this tender film takes you into the heart of rural South Africa, giving you an insight into village life. The Letter Reader reminds us of the power of literacy, an important theme for our festival, which raises funds to support education in South Africa.
