MURDER IN THE CATHEDRAL (1951)

In 1950, after receiving the Nobel prize for literature for his outstanding, pioneer contribution to present-day poetry, T.S. Eliot worked very closely with director George Hoellering on the script and production of the film adaptation of Eliot's verse dramatization of the murder of Thomas Becket.

The resulting film-poem is a deep reflection on issues of faith, politics, and the common good. The dramatic structure owes much to the 14th- and 15th-century mystery plays, yet the piece still speaks to an age all too aware of the brutal arrogance of power.
