An extraordinary family saga set in Italy from 1966 through 2003. It chronicles the life of the middle-class Carati family, focusing primarily on brothers Nicola (Luigi Lo Cascio) and Matteo (Alessio Boni), as their life paths separate during youth and they experience major political and social events in post-WWII Italy. Among the most important historic events in the background of the movie: the Arno River flood in Florence; the student movements in the '60s and '70s; the Brigate Rosse and terrorism; the Basaglia Law and mental institutions; worker protests; the Mafia.


The first part of the movie spans from summer 1966 to spring 1980 (183 minutes).

The second part goes from summer 1982 to spring 2003 (183 minutes).
