In 1943, the Nazis deported more than 1,000 Italian Jews from occupied Rome to Auschwitz. To save more Roman Jews from death, doctors at the Fatebenefratelli Hospital invented Syndrome K, described as a deadly and highly contagious disease which “infected” hundreds of patients there. Fearing illness, the Nazis avoided searching the hospital ward for Jews, turning their attention elsewhere. This documentary tells how the doctors used Syndrome K to fool the Nazis and protect Jews within the hospital.
