Sanctuary - noun - a place of refuge or safety. The series explores a small town in Pennsylvania where, for many, this town was in fact their sanctuary. An old blue collar steel town, Coatesville at one point was a thriving rural community, populated by mostly white families. Over the years, more black families settled in Coatesville looking for work at the steel plants. Today, you can also find a strong Latino community. The difference of current-day Coatesville is that the steel companies are packing up to move, or closing down completely. Poverty is at an all-time high and the opioid crisis has taken over much of the town. The most visitors they receive are during an election year. Spotlights come on in Coatesville and the citizens are told they are the backbone of America, they are the true patriots... What happens with these citizens after the major news outlets leave the city, after the lights are turned off, and all of the famous politicians are gone? When the new policies are put in place, it throws the citizens into a whirlwind, trying to simply keep their feet on the ground and keep their families together.
