Landfill sites are burning because Europe doesn’t really have an effective recycling system. Millions of tons of European trash used to land in Asia to be sunk in the oceans, burnt or buried. Since China blocked the import of trash, it started to go to Malaysia and Vietnam, as well as Poland, Czech Republic and Bulgaria. Fake papers, not-existing processing plants and heaps of burning waste are not a Polish invention. The Camorra of Naples has been making use of it for years. Nunzio Perrella was the first mob member to see its potential. In a short feature on recycling he said that politicians and big companies benefit from the Camorras actions. „Trash is money and politics is trash” – said the remorseful boss of the recycling underground.
