"There's so many different layers that created Toni that you see today." Follow Toni William's retelling of her life journey in this new short documentary directed by internationally-recognized photographer Chloe Aftel. Toni, a transgender woman who discovered her true self in the 1970s, narrates her individual evolution while showing off a fabulous sense of style and recounting amusing anecdotes; all details that are simultaneously juxtaposed with the U.S.'s overarching current political landscape, which is further contextualized by facts related to LGBTQ+ communities. From leaving home at age fourteen and residing in San Francisco's famous Tenderloin neighborhood, now encompassing the world's first legally recognized transgender district, to time spent in California's Vacaville Prison, Toni's experiences weave a rich tapestry of one woman's life, struggles, and triumphs. As a young woman helping her friends turned certified Peer Specialist working in the trans community, Toni's message rings out clear: "I am a better person because I am true to myself."-Chloe Aftel has spent her career working in commercial photography, photojournalism, and film. She’s an established name in modern photography with work featured in The New York Times, Mother Jones, Playboy, Dazed &amp; Confused, Vogue Germany, The Hollywood Reporter, The Wall Street Journal, Vogue Italia, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, Teen Vogue, and more. Aftel has photographed victims of sexual violence, reported on COVID 19's impact on the trans community, and gained access as the first reporter in COVID wards of the West Coast’s hardest-hit hospitals. She has covered underground abortion providers, the impact of gender pronouns on daily life, and clergy abuse. Aftel's first book, 'Outside &amp; In Between,' is an award-winning anthology covering gender non-conforming people across the United States.

Starting Whistle explores the intersection of gender, sport, and power through the story of Maren “Nightmaren.” By day, she navigates the demands of work and family; by night, she laces up her skates and takes on the track.--Eve Sanchez is a filmmaker born and raised in East Los Angeles. A beginner roller derby player in the Los Angeles area, Eve created Starting Whistle as part of their master’s thesis project. Their interest and participation in roller derby make the film especially personal, marking their first step into filmmaking with an authentic perspective.

(Includes Spoilers) Inspired by my viral true story. Akita the drag queen hasn't left her apartment in days. Her inboxes overflow with messages of praise, concern, and... death threats. She lets in a film crew and recounts to a reporter about how Nazis stormed her Drag Story Hour in June 2022. Akita recounts that day. When she retreated to the library's restroom. When the police arrived and Akita could hear them laughing... with the Nazis. After the interview, Akita breaks down. In the wake of a terrifying encounter, an overwhelmed drag queen struggles under the weight of public attention.

An introduction video to the Louise Lawrence Transgender Archive, made for participation in a conference of transgender archivists in Italy in 2021.-Lorin Murphy is a transgender filmmaker and producer from the San Francisco Bay Area. Upon graduating from the Academy of Arts, Lorin became a film projectionist (2001-present) and a cinematographer. He has incorporated his vast knowledge of projection technique and hands-on experience into his films. His main body of work is found footage experimental collage film, both in 16mm and video. As a founding member of the Periwinkle Cinema film collective, Lorin helped produce their feature film, Hanky Code: The Movie as part of the 2015 National Queer Arts Fest, which has since been screened across the country and internationally. In 2018 Lorin directed the Homobiles’s music video Homosafe, which premiered at the San Francisco Transgender Film Festival and also was showcased at Frameline 2019's Transtastic program. Lorin co-produced a short film based on the life of Lou Sullivan, for which he was also the lead cinematographer. Lou a San Francisco Fantasy was shown at the San Francisco Transgender Film Festival in 2020 and Translations in Seattle in 2021.
