Festival co-chair Neal Schindler spoke with Those Who Remained director Barnabás Tóth about what compelled him to adapt the 2004 novel on which the film is based; how he decided to depict the main characters' trauma as he did; and which filmmakers have most influenced his work, both thematically and aesthetically.

Barnabás Tóth is a twice Oscar-shortlisted Hungarian writer, director, and actor. His short film "My Guide" (2013) was viewed more than 1.5 million times on Vimeo within a week of being uploaded, making it one of the most successful short films ever made in Hungary. His short film "Chuchotage" (2018) was shortlisted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the 91th Oscars in 2019. His second feature, "Those Who Remained" (2019), premiered at Telluride Film Festival and was shortlisted for the Best International Film Category at the 2020 Oscars.
