The iconic, charismatic, African-American standup comedienne Jackie “Moms” Mabley was often referred to as “the funniest woman in the world”.
Moms based her stage persona on her grandmother, who had been a slave, broke racial and sexual boundaries and continues to inspire comedians to this day.
In her triumphant directorial film debut, Whoopi Goldberg, a modern-day comedy favourite, pays homage to this pioneering talent in a documentary championing the world’s first African American female comedy star.
