Rediscovering Hattie Jacques
Introduced by Lucy Porter
Hattie (2011) Cert 15
Dir: Dan Zeff UK 84mins
Now almost a decade old, this docudrama ignited a re-evaluation of an actress and performer best known to us for her ‘matronly’ appearances in the Carry On film series.
This acclaimed TV biopic, starring Ruth Jones as Hattie Jacques, stands in colourful contrast to Hattie's stiff, usually celibate portrayal of the matron on camera. The biopic documents how, behind closed doors and while filming Carry On Cabby, Hattie began a passionate affair with her handsome young chauffeur, John Schofield (Aidan Turner). All this while she was still married to Dad's Army actor John Le Mesurier (Robert Bathurst).
