Slapstick’s rediscovery of the year, curated by David Robinson in collaboration with the Nederland Silent Film Festival and Amsterdam’s EYE archive, is a magical moment of silent comedy till today ignored by film historians.

The newly booming Italian film industry saw the appeal of comedy, and recruited comedians from circus, music hall and the streets. With names like Cretinetti, Polidor, Kri Kri, between 1909 and the disruption of World War I, they made films of brilliance and sophistication that will still amaze and enchant new audiences. Watch a selection of these rare films live online hosted by film historian David Robinson with live piano accompaniment by Daan van den Hurk.
