Solid Ground Filmmaker Comment

Jared Ragland’s photographic work is rooted in his lifelong exposure to the landscapes, people, aesthetics, and storytelling traditions of the American South. A native of Birmingham, Ala., Jared is a graduate of Tulane University and served as Photo Editor for the White House under the Bush and Obama presidencies. He is currently at work on a long term documentary on methamphetamine use on Sand Mountain, Alabama, which was awarded third place at the 2017 PhotoNOLA Review Prize. In 2015, Jared was named one of TIME Magazine’s “Instagram Photographers to Follow in All 50 States,” and he is the recipient of a 2017 Alabama State Council on the Arts fellowship. Jared's photographs have been exhibited internationally and featured by The Oxford American, The New York Times, and TIME.

In startlingly intimate encounters, strangers share hopes and dreams as well as stories of resiliency, suffering and loss. Many are in states of transition, struggle, or waiting for change.
