Epoh Beech re-imagines literature and explores spirit of place to take you on a journey from West Africa to the Thames in London and the Rhine in Northern Germany. The Masque of Blackness took 7 years to make and is hand drawn in charcoal. There are themes of moonlight, oceans, rivers, the environment and mythological symbolism. Our guides on the journey are Hermes, a grey seal, and Pegasus, the winged horse, they are both unconstrained by the straight jacket of time.

The animated short submitted was created by a collaborative and interdisciplinary group of students at the University of Washington. For each of the student production team members this was their very first experience creating an animated short film. The film was based on a study of politics and power.

TYRANT

In a world of darkness, the Tyrant, a being made of light, is the only solace to those who fear the dark. His followers must decide whether or not they will continue to live under his cruelty, or embrace the fear of the unknown.

Inspired by Rip Van Winkle by Washington Irving. A procrastinating writer sleeps his life away on the New York City Subway. He awakens in the modern day, an old man, all alone in a city he no longer recognizes.

The short opens with a woman saying, “We are not as we were, you and I.” With this ominous opening, a theme of contrasting the past and the present is rooted. Taking place in Toronto in the 24th century, five humanoid warriors face off against their enemies to try to reclaim their digital homeland. The warriors are smaller than their larger robot enemies, but they have the benefit of their humanity. Together, they wield large weapons and narrowly dodge attacks.
The film features just two humans, played by actors Cara Gee (Wynter) and Zoe Doyle (The Silence). The other “actors” are robots, each distinguished by a small scrap of clothing, such as a scarf or bandana, to symbolize their humanness. As they battle for territory, the robots communicate with each other and display human tendencies, such as stopping to help a wounded robot soldier. 
In the meantime, Aegis, the robot’s leader, speaks with her mother, Kym Minamoto. Kym is the leader of the opposition, and she and her daughter embark in bitter diatribes about the true meaning of humanity and its’ role within the snowy realm. The tensions run high between the mother and daughter as their opposing sides fight each other on the battlefield.

Two-hundred years after humanity has abandoned the real world for a digital one, a security agent must figure out how to deal with a threat from a world no one has seen for centuries - the real world.

A young painter and her mother paint a mural that brings life and color to their Arabian village. Suddenly, an Oryx attacks the village, turning its people into stone and kidnapping her mother. The girl chases the Oryx as it wreaks havoc on the village, eventually catching up and facing it in a climactic battle. However, the Oryx is stronger than the girl and defeats her. The girl wakes up in a dark desert highway, having lost her mother forever, her world falls apart as she walks into the darkness. She hits a wall, crying over her loss. However, she realizes that the wall is the same mural she and her mother were working on. She chooses to live life bravely and continue painting the mural.

STARTING POINT

A young southwest Arabian wall painter spends her days with her mother painting the village, and bringing life and color to her community. Until one day, an Oryx Kidnaps her mother and Corrupts the town! Will the little girl succeed in rescuing her mother and save the village?

In the middle of the night on the way to the bathroom, a girl & her doll friend enter an imaginary forest where they encounter eerie toys & oncoming water. Can they make it to the bathroom in the end?

THE PEAK

A story about a girl named Sarah, who takes her animal doll friend Steven with her, when trying to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. She has to go through a dark imaginary forest, where she meets creepy toys and escapes from oncoming water, and finally arrives at the top of the toilet tower.

The animated short submitted ( Dancer By The Sea) was created by a collaborative and interdisciplinary group of students at the University of Washington. For each of the student production team members this was their very first experience creating an animated short film. The location for the story is based on a house that is located on the Olympic Peninsula in western Washington state in the US and the student production team travelled to that location several times to get a feel for the geography and the visual character and mood of the area and their story. The story was based on two interactions with sea otters in the wild at a state park and the relationship that developed between the older woman and the otter is a composite of the those experiences. The students captured the sadness and loss of a woman many years their senior and followed her transformation over one year in a sensitive, beautiful and subtle depiction of life changes that are internal. The film screened at the Seattle International Film Festival. Barbara Mones served as the Director and Producer for the film but the film was created by the students and staff in the program.

DANCER BY THE SEA

A lonely widowed older woman who lives by the sea finds and adopts an abandoned baby otter on her property. The relationship that develops transforms her life.

If Anything Happens is an elegy on grief, a powerful and relatable film. We see ourselves in the loss, we see ourselves in the pain, and we see ourselves in the way forward. If Anything Happens I Love You is the cry of a generation—the ones lost and the ones left behind.
