This documentary short follows the journey of five Bay Area artists from their artist studios to the grounds of the 2018 Manzanar Pilgrimage in California. At Manzanar, the artists immerse themselves in the camp environment to unearth haunting voices of this WWII period of incarceration and historical injustice. The artists each bring their distinct family stories of incarceration and the effect this has had on their art into the documentary’s collective story. The Sansei women perform a series of artistic offerings and rituals to specifically honor their formerly imprisoned family members and to all who shared this Japanese American victimization. This ancestral honoring is the centerpiece and heart that carries this documentary’s story. Directors Biography -&nbsp;Shari Arai Deboer, Na Omi Judy Shintani, Ellen Bepp, Kathy Fujuu-Oka &amp; Reiko Fujii<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/eventive-static/dfacf9a7f695668424b56c515abab937.jpg" width="209">Artists Shari Arai DeBoer (printmaker), Na Omi Judy Shintani (mixed-media), Ellen Bepp (mixed-media), Kathy Fujii-Oka (painter) and Reiko Fujii (mixed-media), were members of the Asian American Women Artists Association. They shared a common history: many of their relatives were unjustly incarcerated in American concentration camps during WWII. As a way to honor their ancestors and the rest of the 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry who were imprisoned, the artists decided to journey together to the 2018 Manzanar Pilgrimage.

A beautiful film from one of our committee members. First screening ever! This film is about intergenerational connection through flowers, a love affair her grandma carried throughout her life, it was the everlasting bloom that marked some of her life's biggest moments and triggered some of the deepest memories from long ago. Grandma's craft of ikebana fueled some of her happiest memories, the handmade bouquets from Grandma for every life celebration, be it birthdays, anniversaries - any occassion that called for a party, flowers were a celebration even of life during a time of death.&nbsp; Directors Biography- Jessica Savage <img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/eventive-static/dd25f80b8919b3ef175b0667771a7236.jpg" width="144">Always in between, even since she was little, you could say Jessica is a hybrid of sorts, multi-racial, multi-faceted, multi-interests &amp; multi-perspective. Grandmas Flowers

From the hand-drawn typeface on the cover of&nbsp;The Godfather&nbsp;to Herman Miller’s biomorphic coffee table, the work of Japanese American designers including&nbsp;Ruth Asawa,&nbsp;George Nakashima,&nbsp;Isamu Noguchi,&nbsp;S. Neil Fujita, and&nbsp;Gyo Obata&nbsp;permeated postwar culture. While these second generation Japanese American artists have been celebrated, less-discussed is how their World War II incarceration—a period of intense hardship and discrimination—had a powerful effect on their lives and art. He has an MFA in Directing from the UCLA School of Film, TV, and Digital Media, and has made over 50 short films, documentaries, and music videos. His feature film The Crumbles went on a nationwide tour of theaters, festivals, and universities, and is available on Amazon Prime Video. His Emmy-Winning documentary Masters of Modern Design: The Art of the Japanese American Experience was co-produced by KCET in Los Angeles. Masters of Modern Design: The Art of the Japanese American Experience

Known as the “weaver’s weaver,” artist Kay Sekimachi is a pioneer in the textile arts. Her embrace of unconventional materials has helped to elevate weaving from “craft” to “art.” “Artbound” explores Sekimachi’s connection to other second-generation Japanese American artists of her time and how the incarceration of Japanese American’s during World War II affected her art and life.
