The film premiered in-competition at the Academy Award-qualifying 25th Austin Film Festival. His web series “People Like Us” won ‘Best Short TV Drama’ at the 2016 ITVFest (Vermont), ‘Best Web Drama Series’ at the Formosa Festival of International Filmmaker Awards, and ‘Best Supporting Actor – Drama’ at the 2017 Indie Series Awards. The series is distributed on HereTV in the United States, and Gagaoolala in most of Asia.Leon’s short films have screened at festivals in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Hong Kong, Seoul, Bangkok, Tokyo, Tehran, Germany, Italy, Canada and more. Highlights include “The Three Sisters” which won ‘Best Short Film’ at the 2012 NETPAC-Jogja Asian Film Festival; “Move Out Notice” which broadcast on the Lifetime (Asia) channel and nominated for Best Script at the Singapore Short Film Awards; “Nuts” which received honourable mention for the YOMYOMF Interpretations 2.0 competition, founded by Justin Lin (“Fast &amp; Furious”, “Star Trek: Beyond”).A graduate of Chapman University with a BFA in Creative Producing, and Ngee Ann Polytechnic with a diploma in Film, Sound &amp; Video, Leon is also an alumnus of Outfest InFusion (2016), Berlinale Talents (2014), Asian Film Academy (2013) and Talents Tokyo (2012).

SIN-SFO

For years, advocates have been organizing to make healthcare access a right for all in California, regardless of their immigration status. Set against the backdrop of California’s Health4All campaign, COVER/AGE follows two leaders who have been championing the immigrant health justice movement in the Golden State. One is an elderly caregiver who has spent over a decade taking care of senior citizens, in spite of being ineligible for the same services she provides. The other is a long-time community advocate who has been organizing directly impacted people towards policy change at the intersection of immigrant, health, and gender justice. As conversations around universal healthcare and single-payer continues to gain momentum at the national level, this film highlights the urgency of expanding healthcare access to undocumented people by centering the unwavering voices of immigrant health justice leaders. Director Biography - Set Hernandez Rongkilyo<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/eventive-static/ddebf259f05d137a80a032758f7316f8.jpg" width="111">Set Hernandez Rongkilyo is an undocumented immigrant filmmaker and community organizer whose roots come from Bicol, Philippines. Set produces videos and short documentaries that advance grassroots messaging for migrant justice campaigns. Their work is rooted in the belief that cultural strategies can propel political transformation, and to do this, directly-impacted people must embrace the empowerment to tell their own stories authentically.

Having grown up with an interest in directors such as Edward Yang and Lou Ye, Szu-Wei is currently exploring a means to bridge the film language he grew up on with his experiences living in the US. His latest short film JAY was awarded the ALTERNATIVE SPIRIT AWARD LGBTQ SHORT FIRST Prize, and the YOUTH JURY AWARD BEST LGBTQ FILM GRAND PRIZE at the 2019 Rhode Island International Film Festival. It will have its European premiere at the 2020 BFI Flare: London LGBTQ+ Film Festival.

Frustrated by having to work at his mother's corner store on a Saturday, 18-year-old Jimmy seizes an opportunity to prove himself to a Chinatown hooligan. 30-year-old Haiyang follows a Coyote through the US-Mexican border when his younger brother, Bin, starts to fall ill. As Jimmy and Haiyang venture toward their own goals, it becomes clear that there is a very high price to pay. The film intimately follows them on their emotional, physical, and moral journeys, providing a timely exploration of family, identity, and sacrifice. Director Biography -&nbsp;Yiran Zhou<a href="https://storage.googleapis.com/ff-storage-p01/press_kits/headshots/001/285/549/original/40a9b60e8d-headshot.jpg?1554623013" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/ff-storage-p01/press_kits/headshots/001/285/549/thumb/40a9b60e8d-headshot.jpg?1554623013" width="97" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: none; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12.95px; vertical-align: middle; display: block; height: auto; max-width: 100%; position: relative;"></a>Born and raised in Beijing, China, Yiran received his BA from Franklin &amp; Marshall College in Pennsylvania, where he double majored in History and Film Study. He also spent a semester at FAMU, Prague, as part of a study abroad program. He moved back to Beijing upon graduation, where he worked on short films in collaboration with students from the Beijing Film Academy, commercial features as the 1st AD, as well as directing and shooting commercials. He moved to Los Angeles in 2014 to attend the MFA directing program at UCLA. After completing his degree, Yiran now lives in LA as a freelance filmmaker.

The Way Home

The surprisingly funny coming-of-age story of one Japanese-American undocumented immigrant. When Atsuko Okatsuka was a child in Japan, she thought America was just a giant theme park. When she was 10, her family flew to the States for a "2 month vacation" and never left. They were undocumented, but nobody ever told Atsuko that. Growing up as an undocumented Japanese-American was confusing. There were exciting discoveries--like ranch dressing and basketball--but also a constant feeling of not belonging. Tragedy breeds comedy, and today Atsuko is a successful stand-up comedian, listed by Vulture magazine as a Comedian to Watch in 2018. Her story is a testament to the diversity of undocumented immigrants' experiences. We might not think of airplanes or ranch dressing when we think of undocumented immigration, but maybe we should. Director Biography - William Johnston<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/eventive-static/60a902d4c72b6bdd7add6d07db6dc308.jpg" width="202">Born in Connecticut but raised on the Central Coast of California, William Johnston-Carter graduated from Chapman University with a BFA in Film Production in 2014. After college, William interned for the documentary filmmaker Robert Kenner (Food Inc) before spending two years with AmeriCorps. In 2017, he southbound through-hiked the Appalachian Trail, 2,189 miles from Maine to Georgia. He now works at Define American, a leading immigration-rights nonprofit.

Atsuko's Story

A young aspiring Chinese pianist and a Mexican house painter, unaware of them being neighbors, go through a day of disillusionment in symphony. Director Biography - Peier Tracy Shen<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/eventive-static/f4e22ed64ec12c956a4b8013a5066c8e.jpg" width="363">Peier Tracy Shen is a Chinese writer-director currently based in Los Angeles. She has written, directed, and produced several shorts films and stage plays. Her films were selected to BAFTA Student Shortlist and several Oscar-qualifying festivals such as Cleveland International Film Festival, LA Shorts Fest, Nashville Film Festival and DC APA Film Festival (where she won Best Director). For three years, she served as a marketing representative for Universal Pictures and interned at FF2 Media as a critic. She graduated with honors from Columbia University, with a double major in English and Film &amp; Media Studies, and recently obtained her MFA in Directing from the AFI Conservatory. She’s drawn to the incommunicable – the unexamined memories that shape a person, the nebulous connections between strangers, and the unconquerable distance between cultures and classes. Her characters, somehow always out of place, are set to embark on the challenging task of finding themselves in the world.
