To mark the release of Terence Davies’ latest film Benediction, we are thrilled to welcome the acclaimed director onto the Cinema of Ideas to discuss the making of the film and his reflections on a long career as one of Britain’s foremost film poets. Terence will be in conversation with Brian Robinson, programmer for BFI Flare, from 6:30-7:30pm on Tuesday 24 May.

About the Speakers
Terence Davies
Terence Davies was born in inner-city Liverpool on 10 November 1945, the youngest child in a large Catholic, working-class family. After working for ten years as a clerk in a shipping office and a book-keeper in an accountancy firm, from 1965-1973 he gained amateur acting experience, winning the LAMDA Gold Medal and first prize in the National Arts Awards. From 1973 – 1975 he was a student at The Coventry Drama School. There he wrote the screenplay for Children, which he directed with backing from the BFI Production Board. He then went to the National Film School, where he completed Madonna and Child as his graduation film in 1980. Three years later, thanks to funding from the Greater London Arts Association and the BFI, he made Death and Transfiguration. These three short to medium-length films comprise The Terence Davies Trilogy, which put him on the cinematic map as one of the most original British film-makers of the late 20th century. He has since made nine further feature films, the most recent of which, Benediction, premiered in September 2021. He lives in rural Essex.
Brian Robinson
Brian Robinson was born in Northern Ireland and studied law at Sussex University, where he established a gay film society. He was a founder member of the collectively produced, radical, queer quarterly Square Peg magazine (1982 - 1991) which featured art, style and sexual politics. He joined the British Film Institute press office in 1987 going on to develop a parallel career as a programmer of BFI Southbank, and, since 2000, of BFI Flare: London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival. He has written on queer cinema for several magazines and journals including Sight & Sound and The Guardian. For the BFI he has also produced DVDs of The Erotic films of Peter de Rome and James Bidgood’s Pink Narcissus. He has previously interviewed Leslie Caron, Julie Andrews, Mike Leigh, William Klein and Penny Arcade. He is addicted to film festivals.
