Thando is a film that showcases the experiences of real-life South Africans who navigate the constraints of living in impoverished neighbourhoods. The film delves deep into some of the country’s current affairs, social ills, and socio-economic issues faced by South African youth.

Thando’s predominantly young female cast drives the point home. It’s emotional, informative, moving, relatable, relevant, suspenseful, thought-provoking and gives hope young black girls.

Director Statement

Tell us about the inspiration for this film?

There is a very high rate of teenage suicide in South Africa and I feel that it is a subject that a lot of people talk about when there is a suicide and then the shock dies down and the issue is swept under the carpet.

Our aim was to make a film that was both educational and would give hope to young people who are struggling to cope the many issues that they face and who have thoughts of suicide.

What are the main issues that you shine a light on in Thando?

The film deals with a number of issues, for example skin tone and how having a very dark complexion as opposed to those who are ‘yellow bone’. We deal with gender-based violence, with issues of young girls needing to fit in, the loss of a parent, bullying and how bullying is often a trigger to committing suicide.

How do you feel we need to equip our young girls to be able to take their rightful place in society?

I think we need to instil family values and teach them about heritage, so they know who they are and where they come from. When they know who they are, they will not be easily swayed by outside forces on TV, in magazines or on social media, because they will be proud of their rightful place in society and know that they can remain confident in their own skin and not try to please the world.

Tell us about the casting of the film?

Our films are raw and we, therefore, prefer to use raw talent. This film in particular was created for young people by young people and we deliberately chose young talented cast in keeping with the film’s authenticity.

Where did you choose to shoot this film and why?

We found perfect locations in Soweto that were ideal for this story. There was also the convenience of shooting there given the time constraints we had. As independent filmmakers, we have to work cleverly, but this was a good choice because the locations give enormous depth to the film.

Talk us through your choice of DOP and what he brings to this film?

I wanted a DOP who young and who would understand the story from a teenager’s perspective and someone with an eye for black stories and how to tell them without only focusing on beautiful pictures. I needed someone who understands what raw is.

Why do you feel that this film will resonate with audiences beyond South Africa’s borders?

This is a universal story. Teenage suicide is something that affects all societies, throughout the world, to a greater or lesser extent. This is the hallmark of Bakwena Productions, we tell universal stories.

What is your message of hope to our young girls?

My hope is that the film will speak to both young girls and young boys, showing them that when they encounter obstacles in life, it is not the end of the world. I hope that Thando will show them that for every problem there is a solution and there is light at the end of the tunnel – even if they cannot see it.
