The nine films in this programme, works of fiction and documentary, pay tribute to those who came before in ways that are at turns haunting, touching, and boldly provocative.

Through a suicide note written by enslaved Afro-Brazilian, Timóteo, memories of Brazil’s history of slavery are revealed, that overflow into imagery showing ethereal landscapes, accompanied by a soundtrack of harrowing noise.

Shot on Super 8mm film developed with plant medicines, Spirit Emulsion follows an Indigenous woman’s connection to the spirit world as she activates a Taíno legacy.

Katherine is an assemblage of layered, hand-processed 16 mm film strips, made with archival footage Mondesir sourced from the Internet. In this film, he constructs a dialogue between renowned African-American dancer, choreographer, author, educator, and social activist Katherine Mary Dunham (1909–2006) and Grupo Misterîos del Vodú, a contemporary folkloric performance-based troupe of Cuban-Haitians in Havana.

Set in the liminal space between our postcolonial reality and deep-seated ancestral intuition, Ghost Island is both an interpretation of and an ode to the shadows that live around us.

Taking a legend about Mackandal, the Haitian Maroon, as its starting point, I'll Be Back! explores black metamorphosis alongside institutional collecting practices and colonial violence. The film shifts across digital, 16mm and archival formats, interrupting conceptions of time in order to question the distances between myth, fabulation and machinations of power.

A first-generation immigrant seeks to re-create a perfect childhood meal of fufu. In so doing she immerses herself in reminiscence, tradition, and her relationship with her mother.

The night finds Orestes in a thick tropical forest holding a machete and looking furiously for Damián, his younger brother. Orestes discovers his brother having sex with another man. What happens next will change the brothers’ lives forever.

Wake and soil, skin and voice: Hope Strickland's film locates a legacy of slavery and colonial exploitation beneath the archive's official chronicle, in the deep historical memory of the body. "If I could name you myself (I would hold you forever)" sings an alternate history of resistance—familial, elemental, and sensuous.
