Spot Stands Up
This short film builds on found footage from arguably the first recordings of a dog surfing, circa 1926. The adorable dog “Spot” is a silent movie star in this film, rediscovered in San Francisco’s Prelinger Archives — recut, rescored, and animated by San Francisco artists Zack McCune and Larisa Berger and topped with an original electronic-based soundtrack.
Street Surfers
A pro surfer, Frank Solomon from Cape Town, meets two young men in Johannesburg known as “street surfers” who comb the streets for recyclables to make a living. Their unsung efforts just to survive, helps reduce plastics in the ocean. Inspired, Frank, also an avid ocean activist, decides to show them the ocean for the first time. An inspirational story of friendship and how two seemingly different worlds can be connected.
7 Lessons From Japan
Professional surfer Dennis Tihara who grew up and lives in Brazil visits Japan to learn about his Japanese heritage with a surfer’s eye toward what can be discovered about surfing in Japan. Entertaining and idiosyncratic, this film is a new take on the surf film genre.
A la Mar (To the Sea)
It’s been scientifically proven that the sea positively affects us when we are in or near it. It’s a reset button, of sorts. In a country known for its passionate surfers, the town of Cabo Blanco showcases the struggles and successes of surfers and fishermen, each vying for what the ocean has to offer. In the end, they realize that collaboration can have a more positive outcome than contentious competition.
Elude Surf Film
Footage of Indonesia surf has become common in many surf movies. Footage of Scotland’s surf is less common. Elude contrasts the difference between the warm tropical Indonesia surf with the colder Scottish waters. It also shares the similarities of the two spots as the surfers ride the mountains of water: great waves, camaraderie and plenty of time in the green room.
