In 1963, Roland is born with a clubfoot, and everyone around his mother seems prepared to tell her what he will never be able to do. Esther has other plans. She promises her son that he will walk, then spends decades refusing to let circumstance have the last word. Funny, sprawling, and deeply affectionate, Once Upon My Mother is as much about the beautiful absurdity of family as it is about a mother’s ferocious love.
