Jazz history tells a story of male heroes: Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, Oscar Peterson, Thelonius Monk. While a small group of women gained acclaim as vocalists - Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Holiday, Nina Simone - the highest status in jazz has always been reserved for instrumentalists. Yet female instrumentalists are almost undocumented in jazz history and remain a small minority—five percent--of the professional community in Canada. Change the Tune brings together seven female jazz musicians and asks the question: “What difference would community make?” Combining the work of contemporary female musicians with footage from the 1960's, Tune creates an alternate world of what might have been and is a compelling story about the power of community and the joy of music.
