Set in the 16th century, three Jewish sisters are raised as Catholics under the protection of the Queen of Portugal and sent by her to a colony in the jungles of Brazil to be married. Although initially traumatised, they form deep emotional relationships within the community and with the men that they love. This fragile balance is shattered when a Spanish inquisitor arrives at the colony to hunt down and return the Jewish women to Portugal to be burned at the stake. This terror sets apart those who will try and save the women, and those who will only save themselves.
