Session 22

  • DAY ONE (US, 81 min)

Over the past several years, political divisions have cut through every aspect of American society; through our communities, our workplaces, our friendships, even through our own families. There is, however, a growing movement of people who recognize this polarization as the single greatest threat to our democracy, and they’re working tirelessly to build bridges across the divide. The Reunited States is a feature documentary that profiles people who have dedicated their lives to promoting depolarization and communication across the political divide.

Ben Rekhi is an award-winning filmmaker. After working with the Coen bros. on O Brother, Where Art Thou? Rekhi was hired by George Clooney to work on Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. Rekhi went on to produce the Spirit Award-nominated feature film Bomb the System and direct the SXSW Audience Award winner Waterborne. Rekhi then worked as a producer with director Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) and producer Jason Blum (Get Out), and went on to serve as the Vice President of Acquisitions for Apsara Distribution. Rekhi’s second feature The Ashram stars Academy Award Winner Melissa Leo, Kal Penn, and was released by The Orchard in 2018. Rekhi then directed and produced a documentary series for PBS called The Hidden Vote. He is currently in post-production on his third feature film Maria, co-financed by Bron Studios (Leave No Trace, Fences, Birth of a Nation) and executive produced by XYZ Films (The Raid).
