In 2019 the average suicide rate amongst New York City police officers more than doubled. Nationwide, the reported number of police suicides surpassed every year on record, more dying by suicide than in the line of duty. Little has been done to combat this new normal. In fact, quite the opposite, as evidenced by the coined term “Rubber Gun Club”: a derogatory colloquialism used within law enforcement for those individuals who return to the force after mental health leave.
