Pushed to society’s margins, the characters and subjects inhabiting the films of this set confront the difficulties that their situations entail. Some resort to their profession’s violence (Jheff Wick) or through a friendship that makes them believe that the grass might truly be greener on the other side (Her Name is Like a Sigh). Others will come to accept their life’s station for the good of their children (Pipe Dreams). And for some, tragedy and a lack of agency over a situation results in personal devastation (Resurrection and 39). – Eric Nong

[Jheff Wick contains strong stylized violence throughout. 39 contains depictions of human suffocation throughout.]

Since his lover commits suicide after contracting HIV from him, Thien, a seropositive gay man isolates himself from society, lets his health go and prays daily to Mother Mary for forgiveness of his guilt. Little does he know that his prayer has been secretly answered in the form of a young wanderer whom he encounters. After they sleep together, the stranger stays with him despite knowing his health status.
