This surreal, Indigenous romance from Anishinaabe writer-director Darlene Naponse (Falls Around Her) unfolds in the poetic “fluidity of time, touch, realism and reverie.” In a Northern Ontario dive bar, SHE (Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers, magnificent) and HE (Braeden Clarke, soulful) exchange tender glances as they wait out the apocalypse. Natural disasters are raging outside. Settlers are panicking: the world is on fire. But for those who have never known privilege, the world has been ending since it first began.

SHE has just quit her job in the city, tired of fighting for change in a stagnant colonial and patriarchal system. HE and SHE are both mourning their families and missing home on their reservations. The world may be unraveling– but the cosmic power of a lover’s touch will enable them to move past trauma and reset everything. Utterly enchanting, Stellar is must-see cinema for those who delight in magical realism and happy endings.
