Small Island Stories 2 is an audio and visual production based around stories of those who came to Derby on the Windrush and those of their descendants, first, second and third generations. The production is predominantly based around the artform of Hip Hop and spoken word with features from a number of local artists to create a body of eclectic work inspired by the Windrush movement and influences from the Caribbean that has become entwined and part of common culture within Great Britain. This event at QUAD will be the first listening party for Small Island Stories - with more showcases set to take place across Derby for 2023.

About James Batchelor

James Batchelor is a lyricist of Jamaican descent. Born and raised in Great Britain and residing in Derby since 2002. His passion for music and knowledge about his heritage and culture forms the basis of both Small Island Stories and Small Island Stories 2.

Funded by Derby CAN and with the support of various Derby based organisations (Mashup Derby, DWICA, Open Doors, QUAD, Nathan Addai) this project plays a role in the continued documentation of oral histories that appreciate the power of Hip Hop and spoken word as tools for learning. The project falls in line with Black History month with the desired outcomes being to share stories of hope, struggle and successes on an everlasting journey.

Small Island Stories is available now with the "Legacy Tapes" branding acting as a conduit for storytelling and black history in a creative way.
