The Department of Interior’s Bison Conservation Initiative (BCI) is a 10-year roadmap to advance collaborative bison conservation. With agency leaders from the US & Canada, we discuss efforts to restore bison, and the BCI potential to promote the ecological and cultural restoration of bison. Produced with support from the Hurleyville Performing Arts Centre.

Johnna Blackhair

Johnna Blackhair is the Deputy Bureau Director for the Office of Trust Services at the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). The BIA mission is to enhance the quality of life, to promote economic opportunity, and to carry out the responsibility to protect and improve the trust assets of American Indians, Indian tribes and Alaska Natives.


Paul Cross

Paul Cross is a Research Wildlife Biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The USGS mission is to monitor, analyze, and predict current and evolving dynamics of complex human and natural Earth-system interactions and to deliver actionable information at scales and timeframes relevant to decision makers.


Mark Defley

Mark Defley is National Coordinator for Working Lands for Wildlife at the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). The NRCS mission is to deliver conservation solutions so producers can protect natural resources and feed a growing world.


Brian Logan

Brian Logan is the National Wildlife Program Leader for the USDA Forest Service. The mission of the USDA Forest Service is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the Nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations.


Brendan Moynahan

Brendan Moynahan is Research Coordinator and Science Advisor with the Rocky Mountains Cooperative Ecosystems Study Unit in Missoula, MT. He is the current Chair of the Department of Interior’s Bison Working Group and also supports national-level coordination on bison conservation and planning for the National Park Service (NPS). The NPS mission is to preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations.


Frank Quamen

Frank Quamen is the National Wildlife Program Lead for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The BLM mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.


Greg Wilson

Greg Wilson is Senior Bison Ecologist for Parks Canada Agency. The mandate of Parks Canada is to protect and present nationally significant examples of Canada's natural and cultural heritage, and foster public understanding, appreciation and enjoyment in ways that ensure the ecological and commemorative integrity of these places for present and future generations.

Cynthia Hartway

Cynthia Hartway is a conservation biologist with the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Rocky Mountain Program. The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to save wildlife and wild places worldwide through science, conservation action, education and inspiring people to value nature.
